The Amazigh people

A local lady and her child

The Amazigh (Berber) people are the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa. There is some confusion as to their origins. The Amazigh have their own distinct languages and culture. Most Amazigh are Muslims. Before Islam arrived in the 7th Century most Amazigh were Christians. Augustine was a North African Amazigh.

Amazigh people are warm, generous and hard-working, but because of lack of education, are often very poor. Our vision is to change this cycle of poverty by providing education for the local children so that they can have hope. The adults too are showing interest in learning the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic.

We are trying to build a school in El Borj and to this end have already bought a piece of land 1000 sq m. We hope to build a spacious purpose built school with modern equipment including computers and a pleasant learning environment.
